Metaplex Sparks Outrage by Moving to Sweep Unclaimed SOL into Treasury
Metaplex is facing legal threats and community backlash over its plan to transfer over 54,000 unclaimed SOL (approximately $7.3 million) into its DAO treasury.

Metaplex, a leading NFT platform built on the Solana blockchain, has ignited widespread controversy with its recent decision to transfer over 54,000 unclaimed SOL, worth around $7.3 million, into its DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) treasury.
The firm decided to collect funds left dormant during NFT minting as part of a broader initiative. Some users paid these funds to cover on-chain storage costs for metadata.
The unclaimed SOL originates from the concept of “resize rent.” Users originally paid this “resize rent” to help cover the costs of storing metadata tied to NFTs on the blockchain.
Recently, a significant technical upgrade took place that reduced the size of NFT metadata accounts. As a result, there are excess funds remaining that have not been claimed by users. In light of this situation, Metaplex has announced plans to sweep these surplus funds into its DAO treasury. The intention behind this move is to allocate the funds towards community-driven projects.
Metaplex Legal and Community Backlash
While Metaplex views the action as beneficial for the Solana ecosystem, legal experts and community members have raised serious concerns. Burwick Law, a New York-based firm specializing in crypto investor rights, has spoken out against the move.
They argue that Metaplex’s plan could violate consumer protection laws, particularly because users lacked adequate information about reclaiming their funds. Burwick Law warns that failure to ensure transparency and user consent may harm trust in decentralized platforms.
In addition to the legal concerns, many within the Solana community have expressed outrage, with some labeling the action as a potential “rug pull.” Crypto circles often use this term to describe situations where project creators misappropriate funds or act in ways that negatively impact their supporters. Various tools, including SolIncinerator, help users recover their unclaimed SOL, encouraging individuals to take action before the April 25 deadline.
Indeed, users who once entrusted their funds to Metaplex now face a race against time to reclaim what they feel is rightfully theirs. As the deadline approaches, the dispute highlights growing concerns over user rights and ethical practices within the rapidly evolving NFT and DeFi space.
